Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Latics

Wigan was traditionally considered to be a rugby town, but a successful football club was finally founded in 1932. Wigan FC regularly competed in FA Cup competitions, but the Latics were not elected into the Fourth Division until 1978. Wigan won their first promotion in 1982, kicking off a decade of Third Division football. Local businessman and millionaire Dave Whelan bought the club in 1995. The Latics immediately began to progress and they won the Third Division Championship in 1996. Wigan came close to top flight football over the next few seasons, but finally reached the Premiership in 2005. The Latics finished their first Premier League season in tenth place – an impressive result for a newly promoted side.

Wigan Athletic Football Book Coverage

This Wigan Football Book opens with a 6-1 FA Cup tie win over Carlisle in 1934. It goes on to cover a selection of great games through the decades of the 20th Century and many highlights from the present era.

The Wigan Athletic Football Book includes some of the Latics’ biggest games from the early years, when Wigan was still playing in the lower leagues. The Gift Book includes many other tremendous matches, such as Wigan's 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in the 1954 FA Cup third round, the 4-2 win over Chelsea in 1981 and the 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the 1999 play-off semi-final first leg. Read coverage of Wigan’s great rise up the leagues, including becoming Division Two champions in 2003, the 5-0 destruction of Crystal Palace later in that year and the 3-1 defeat of West Ham in 2004. The Wigan Books also feature reports on the club achieving the ultimate prize of promotion to the Premier League in 2005.

Newspaper coverage continues right up to the end of last season. This unique insight into the Latics’ history makes these books truly memorable gifts and a great addition for a collector of Wigan memorabilia.
