Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Hammers

West Ham FC was founded as Thames Ironworks FC in 1895. The club won promotion to the First Division in their inaugural league campaign and it reformed as West Ham United in 1900. The Hammers won their first major trophy in 1964, beating Preston North End in the FA Cup final. The result guaranteed West Ham a place in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in the following season. This was the Hammers’ first European competition, but they were not fazed by the lack of experience. West Ham won the tournament, beating Bayern Munich in the final. The Hammers enjoyed more cup success in the following two decades, winning two FA Cups and reaching a second European final. West Ham has enjoyed several highlights in the league over more recent years, winning promotion to the Premiership – such as in 1993 and 2005 – and surviving nail-biting relegation battles.

West Ham Football Book Coverage

This West Ham Football Book opens with a newspaper report on the 3-0 win over Millwall in 1904, in the opening game at the new Stratford Stadium. It goes on to cover a selection of great matches through the decades of the 20th Century and many highlights from the present era.

Top stories in this fascinating West Ham Football Book include a report on the first ever FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, which the Hammers contested against Bolton Wanderers. The Gift Books also contain coverage of West Ham winning the War Cup in 1940, becoming Division Two Champions in 1958 and winning the title again with record points in 1981. Read about the Hammers winning the FA Cup in 1964, 1975 and 1980 and relive the club’s exploits in Europe, including lifting the Cup Winners Cup in 1965 and reaching the final in 1976. The West Ham Books also look back on the 17 year old Bobby Moore’s First Division debut in 1958, Geoff Hurst’s six goals in the 8-0 win over Sunderland in 1968, the signing of Jimmy Greaves in 1970, Trevor Brooking’s farewell game in 1984 and Harry Redknapp’s appointment in 1989. More recent stories in this special Gift Book include reports on the dramatic 2006 FA Cup final against Liverpool.

Newspaper coverage continues right up to the end of last season. This unique insight into the Hammers’ history makes these books truly memorable gifts and a great addition for a collector of West Ham memorabilia.
