Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Hornets

Watford FC was formed in 1881. The club reached the Second Division in 1969 and the Hornets enjoyed the beginnings of a golden era in the late 1970s. Pop star and boyhood Watford fan, Sir Elton John, became Chairman of the Hornets in 1976. He invested large amounts of money in the club and appointed Graham Taylor as manager at the beginning of the 1976-1977 season. The pair would forge a great working relationship, which was vital for the Hornets’ quick progression. Watford rose from the Fourth Division to the First Division between 1977 and 1982. Remarkably, the Hornets then went on to finish their first ever top flight season in second place. Watford competed in Europe during the following season and reached the final of the FA Cup in 1984. Elton John and Graham Taylor left their respective positions at the club in 1986 and Watford’s good form departed with them. Both men returned for a second period at Watford FC in the late 1990s. The Hornets reached the Premiership in 1999, having spent eleven years outside of the top flight.
