Enjoy a Newspaper History of Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur FC was formed in 1882 and the club turned professional in 1895. Large crowds flocked to watch the side play and they were rewarded by Spurs winning the FA Cup in 1901. Tottenham reached the top flight in 1909 and won the title for the first time in 1951. Arthur Rowe was the manager of the club at the time and he had developed successful ‘push and run’ tactics that made Spurs an attacking and entertaining side. Bill Nicholas became manager in 1958 and he quickly rebuilt the aging team. Tottenham Hotspur won eight major trophies in sixteen years under Nicholas, including a First Division title, three FA Cups, two League Cups and two European trophies. Tottenham’s success on the continent created history, as Spurs became the first British side to win a European trophy when they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963. Tottenham then went on to win the first ever UEFA Cup competition, which took place in 1972. Spurs won the UEFA Cup for a second time in 1984 and the club has since enjoyed further domestic cup success. The 2008 League Cup win was particularly satisfying for Tottenham Hotspur, as they lifted the trophy having beaten London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea back-to-back.

Finally – Did You Know?

  • Tottenham was founded by a group of grammar school boys from All Harrows Church.
  • The side was originally called Hotspur Football Club, but there was another team around at that time called London Hotspur. To avoid confusion between the two clubs, Spurs soon changed their name to Tottenham Hotspur.
  • When Spurs won the FA Cup in 1901, the wife of the Tottenham director tied ribbons to the trophy. This has since become a football tradition.
  • In 1961, Tottenham Hotspur became the first English side to win the league-FA Cup ‘double’ in the twentieth century.
  • Spurs have won at least one trophy in each of the past six decades – a feat only matched by Manchester United.
