Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Saints

Southampton FC was formed in 1885. The club won six Southern League titles over the next decade, including three consecutive championships between 1897 and 1899. The Saints also enjoyed early Cup success, reaching the FA Cup final in 1900 and 1902. Southampton was elected into the Third Division in 1920 and the club won promotion at the end of their first season. The Saints continued to progress towards the top flight, missing out on a place in the First Division in 1950 by just 0.06 of a goal. Southampton was finally promoted to the top flight in 1966, after finishing as runners-up in the Second Division. Southampton was managed by Ted Bates at the time and he helped the club to stay at the elite level for eight years. The Saints also qualified for European football in 1969 and 1971. Southampton was relegated in 1974, but they beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final just two years later. The Saints soon returned to the top flight and they reached the final of the League Cup in 1979. Southampton enjoyed their best ever league result in 1984, finishing as runners-up in the First Division. This was part of a twenty-seven year consecutive spell in the top division.

  • Southampton FC was originally named "St. Mary’s YMA". The club changed name after winning the Southern League title in 1897.
  • Southampton compete against bitter rivals Portsmouth in the ‘South-Coast Derby’. This rivalry reflects the longstanding competition between the two cities; Southampton traditionally housed the leading civilian port, whereas Portsmouth was home to the Royal Navy.
  • The Saints were forced to play at Portsmouth’s Fratton Park Stadium during the Second World War. This is because a bomb landed on the pitch at Southampton’s home ground, leaving an eighteen foot crater in the pitch.
  • When Graeme Souness took charge of the Saints in 1996, he became the first non-English manager in the history of the club.
  • The Southampton Academy has produced many great players who have gone on to play for England. Players to emerge in recent years have included Wayne Bridge, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale.

Fantastic 60th birthday present for a man We purchased this Chelsea football book for our friend who was turning 60, and we had no idea what to get him. We chose this item because he has been a football fan for years, plus we are able to add his name together with an inscription inside for a small fee. Best purchase My husband was given a Newcastle United football book for his 70th birthday last year by friends. He was delighted with it as he was brought up in Newcastle and has been an avid fan although he left the area as a youth to join the Army. His younger brother who also supports Newcastle has also moved away but is still a supporter. He is 70 on June 1st so we had the book sent to his son in Grimsby where they all live now. he will wrap and present it on the day. WE are away on a cruise at the time so we are unable to attend the celebrations. We will see the photos. I hope this review is helpful. 05 May 2013
