Personalised Sheffield United Football Books
Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Blades
Sheffield United FC was founded in 1889. The club reached the top flight for the first time in 1893 and won the First Division title five years later. By 1925, the Blades had won the FA Cup four times. The fourth win occurred in 1925 against Cardiff City. This was the first time that United played a Cup final at Wembley Stadium. The decision to sell prolific forward Jimmy Dunne in 1933 proved to be disastrous. Sheffield United struggled to score goals and the team was relegated after thirty-seven years in the top flight. The Blades won promotion before the War, but fell down again in 1949. Sheffield United went on to win the Second Division Championship in 1953, having scored ninety-three goals in the season. The inconsistent form continued, however, and the club spent many seasons moving between the two leagues. In 1971-1972, United enjoyed a streak of twenty-two matches unbeaten. The Blades reached the First Division during this run of results and they stayed in the highest division for five years. Sheffield United also enjoyed a notable period in the top flight during the 1990s, including two seasons in the newly formed Premier League.
