Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Royals

Reading FC was originally an exhibition team and the club completed a stunning tour of Italy in 1913. The Royals thrashed AC Milan and beat defending league champions Pro Vercelli, Genoa and the Italian national side. The results in Italy strengthened Reading’s reputation in English football and the Royals joined the league at the end of the decade. The club won the Third Division title in 1986 and clinched the (new) Second Division championship in 1991. The Royals finished as runners-up of Division One in 1992, but the restructuring of the leagues to facilitate the new Premiership prevented Reading’s promotion to the top flight. The Royals reached the Premiership in style following a terrific 2005-2006 season. Reading won the Championship with a record 106 points. The club had also enjoyed a 33 match winning streak.

Reading Football Book Coverage

This Reading Football Book opens with an FA Cup-tie win over Aston Villa in 1912. It goes on to cover a selection of great games through the decades of the 20th Century and many highlights from the present era.

Top stories in the Reading Football Book include beating Brentford 7-1 to gain promotion to Division Two in 1926 and Reading’s gallant defeat by Cardiff City in the 1927 FA Cup semi-final. The Gift Books also cover the Royals’ Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1930, with reports looking back at the first 60 years of the club. Relive the excitement of high-scoring thrillers, such as the 10-2 trouncing of Crystal Palace in 1946 and the dominant 3-6 away performance against QPR in 1961. The Reading Book recounts the glorious 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the Littlewoods Cup second round in 1987. You can additionally read about the first match at the Madejski Stadium - played against Luton in 1998 - and follow the subsequent rise in fortunes at the club. This culminated in winning the Championship title in 2006, therefore guaranteeing promotion to the Premiership.

Newspaper coverage continues right up to the end of last season. This unique insight into the Royals’ history makes these books truly memorable gifts and a great addition to any collection of Reading memorabilia.

  • Reading is located in the royal county of Berkshire. Due to this royal connection, the team is officially entitled to wear their home strip at all times.
  • The Royals used to be known as "The Biscuitmen" due to the town’s association with Huntley & Palmers. As a result of this former nickname, the club’s unofficial magazine is called "Hob Nob Anyone?"
  • The Italians were impressed by Reading’s performances on the 1913 exhibition tour.
