Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Lions

Millwall FC was formed in 1885 by workers of JT Morton’s Factory on the Isle of Dogs. The company had originated in Aberdeen, leading to a large Scottish presence in early Millwall teams. The Lions moved to New Cross in 1910 and settled at The Den Stadium. Millwall had reached three FA Cup semi-finals by the late 1930s and the 1937 FA Cup campaign was particularly impressive. Millwall was competing in the Third Division at the time, but the Lions managed to beat three top flight teams to reach the semi-final. Millwall missed out on promotion to the First Division by just one point in 1971. The club eventually entered the top division in 1988 after winning the Second Division Championship. The Lions enjoyed further success in 2004, reaching the FA Cup final for the first time. Although Millwall lost to Manchester United, the East London club qualified for the UEFA Cup, as Manchester United had already qualified for the Champions League. Millwall is famous for the club’s terrific home support and this has played a large part in the Lions’ previous cup successes.

Millwall Football Book Coverage

This Millwall Football Book opens with Millwall’s victory over Arsenal in 1909. It goes on to cover a selection of great games through the decades of the 20th Century and many highlights from the present era.

Memorable stories in these Millwall Football Books include the 5-1 win against Watford in 1922, promotion to the Second Division in 1928 and the 1-6 massacre of Manchester City in 1938. The Gift Books also include coverage of the Lions becoming Division Four Champions in 1962, winning promotion to Division Three in 1965 and reaching Division Two in 1966. Through this Millwall Football Book you can relive the excitement of the team setting a league record of 56 successive wins at home in 1966, narrowly missing promotion to Division One in 1972 and making history as the first club to score a league goal on a Sunday in 1974. Read about finally clinching promotion to Division One in May 1988 and proudly sitting at the top of English football after beating QPR 3-2 in October of that year. Millwall was still challenging for the title in early 1989.

No Millwall Football Book could be complete without featuring the official opening of the new £16m 20,000 all-seater stadium in a friendly against Sporting Lisbon. This unique piece of Millwall memorabilia includes the fantastic 2-0 win over Arsenal away in the 1995 FA Cup third-round and the 1999 Auto Windscreens Cup final against Wigan. The Gift Books of course also include the FA Cup Final against Manchester United in 2004.

Newspaper coverage continues right up to the end of last season. This unique insight into Millwall’s history makes these books truly memorable gifts and a great addition for a collector of Millwall memorabilia.
