Middlesbrough FC originated as a local cricket team. The side decided to become a football club and Boro turned professional in 1899. It took Middlesbrough just three seasons to win promotion to the top flight and Middlesbrough finished at a high of third place in 1914. The club was relegated after an unbroken spell of twenty-two years in the top division. Boro has since won several Second Division titles and enjoyed further periods of top flight football. Middlesbrough FC has also enjoyed cup success, reaching both the FA Cup and League Cup finals in 1997 and playing in a second League Cup final in 1998. Boro won the League Cup on their third attempt, beating Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in 2004. The club was by now under the management of Steve McClaren and he led Boro to great success in Europe. Middlesbrough reached the round of sixteen in the 2005 UEFA Cup and went all the way to the final in 2006.
