Enjoy a Newspaper History of United

Leeds United was founded in 1919 following the enforced disbanding of Leeds City FC. United formed a formidable back line in the 1940s and the 1950s saw the emergence of John Charles. Charles was primarily a centre back, but he also played as a striker. He soon became one of the greatest all-round football talents in the game and Leeds built their team around him. John Charles departed for Juventus in 1958 and the club began to struggle. Don Revie was appointed player-manager at Leeds United in 1961. He led the side to stability and then incredible success. United won the First Division title in 1969 and 1974 and finished in second place on five occasions. Leeds also won both domestic cups and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups. Don Revie left the club in 1974, but the team still got to the 1975 European Cup final. United eventually won their third First Division title in 1992, reached the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2000 and played in the Champions League semi-final in 2001.
