Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Hibees

Hibernian FC was founded in 1875 by a group of Irish boys from Cowgate. The Hibees won their first league trophy in 1903 and added three further titles between 1948 and 1952. The team of the post-war era was headed by an incredible line of forwards, known as "The Famous Five". All five players still hold the top five places on Hibernian’s all-time top goal scorer charts. In 1955, Hibs was invited to play in the first season of the European Cup. The Hibees had finished the previous league campaign in fifth place, but the club’s attacking and free-scoring brand of football had made Hibs very popular. Floodlights already being installed at Easter Road Stadium also contributed towards the invitation. Hibernian became the first British team to take part in the competition and they reached the semi-final stage in their inaugural year. The club enjoyed further exciting runs in Europe during the 1960s, beating prestigious opponents such as Barcelona and Napoli. More recent success has been built around domestic cup runs. Hibernian knocked both Old Firm teams out of the Scottish League Cup en route to the 2004 final. The Hibees won the competition for the third time in 2007.

Hibernian Football Book Coverage

This Hibernian Football Book opens with coverage of the Hibees’ 3-0 win over Hearts in 1921. It goes on to cover a selection of great games through the decades of the 20th Century and many highlights from the present era.

Top stories in this Hibs Football Book include a series of classic encounters against Hearts, such as the 4-0 win in 1938, the 7-0 thrashing in 1973 and the 6-2 walkover in 2000. The Gift Books also feature reports on Hibernian successfully taking on the might of Europe. Read about the Hibees facing top teams like Barcelona, Liverpool, and Juventus. You can additionally revisit outstanding European results, including the 9-1 win over Rosenborg in the 1974 UEFA Cup. The Hibernian Books cover the games that resulted in Hibs winning the league in 1948, 1951 and 1952. There are also articles on the Scottish and League Cup finals of 1947, 1972, 1979, 1985 and 1993. The League Cup final of 1972 is a particularly rewarding story, as the Hibees beat Celtic to claim sweet revenge after losing to them in the previous Scottish Cup final. The Gift Books reflect on many other important games and title wins, such as the 1991 League Cup final victory against Dunfermline.

Newspaper coverage continues right up to the end of last season. This unique insight into Hibs’ history makes these books truly memorable gifts and a great addition for a collector of Hibernian memorabilia.

Finally – Did You Know?

  • Hibernian was led by a committee rather than a single manager until 1902. The Hibees won two Scottish Cups during this era.
  • All five members of Hibs’ "Famous Five" frontline scored more than one hundred goals during their time at the club.
  • The only other Hibs player to score over one hundred goals for the team was Joe Baker. Baker would later become the first Englishman to play for his country without playing for an English club.
  • Hibernian scored 135 goals during their first fifty years in European competition.
  • The Hibs anthem, "Glory, Glory to the Hibees" was written and recorded by Scottish Comedian Hector Nicol.
