Hibernian FC was founded in 1875 by a group of Irish boys from Cowgate. The Hibees won their first league trophy in 1903 and added three further titles between 1948 and 1952. The team of the post-war era was headed by an incredible line of forwards, known as "The Famous Five". All five players still hold the top five places on Hibernian’s all-time top goal scorer charts. In 1955, Hibs was invited to play in the first season of the European Cup. The Hibees had finished the previous league campaign in fifth place, but the club’s attacking and free-scoring brand of football had made Hibs very popular. Floodlights already being installed at Easter Road Stadium also contributed towards the invitation. Hibernian became the first British team to take part in the competition and they reached the semi-final stage in their inaugural year. The club enjoyed further exciting runs in Europe during the 1960s, beating prestigious opponents such as Barcelona and Napoli. More recent success has been built around domestic cup runs. Hibernian knocked both Old Firm teams out of the Scottish League Cup en route to the 2004 final. The Hibees won the competition for the third time in 2007.

  • The only other Hibs player to score over one hundred goals for the team was Joe Baker. Baker would later become the first Englishman to play for his country without playing for an English club.
  • Hibernian scored 135 goals during their first fifty years in European competition.

Fantastic 60th birthday present for a man We purchased this Chelsea football book for our friend who was turning 60, and we had no idea what to get him. We chose this item because he has been a football fan for years, plus we are able to add his name together with an inscription inside for a small fee. Best purchase My husband was given a Newcastle United football book for his 70th birthday last year by friends. He was delighted with it as he was brought up in Newcastle and has been an avid fan although he left the area as a youth to join the Army. His younger brother who also supports Newcastle has also moved away but is still a supporter. He is 70 on June 1st so we had the book sent to his son in Grimsby where they all live now. he will wrap and present it on the day. WE are away on a cruise at the time so we are unable to attend the celebrations. We will see the photos. I hope this review is helpful. 05 May 2013
