Derby County FC was originally a cricket team. A football side was formed in 1884 as a means of keeping everybody together during the winter months. Derby became a founder member of the Football League in 1888 and the club has since won each of the top three division titles. Derby County also won the FA Cup in 1946 after finishing as runners-up on three occasions. Former players Brian Clough and Dave Mackay led the Rams through a golden era of success in the late 1960s and 1970s. Derby County earned promotion to the First Division in 1969 and won the title three years later. The Rams went on to reach the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1973 and Derby won a second top flight league title in 1975. Derby County enjoyed six consecutive seasons in the Premiership between 1996 and 2002. The Rams returned to the Premier League in 2007, having won the Championship Play-Off Finals.
