Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Blues

Chelsea FC was founded in 1905 by Henry Augustus Mears. Mears had redeveloped an old West London Athletics ground, but couldn’t find a football club to make use of it. He decided to create his own team and aimed to make them a glamorous side that would put on a show every week for the local Londoners. Expensive signings helped Chelsea to live up to Mears’ ideas and the club built steadily towards success. Chelsea won First Division titles in the Blues’ fiftieth and one hundredth year. They also claimed three FA Cups by the year 2000. Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003 and invested heavily into the side. Chelsea subsequently became an even bigger force in the game and gradually developed into one of the top football clubs in Europe. Success in the Abramovich era has included Premiership titles, a steady flow of cup wins and a consistent place in the latter rounds of the Champions League,

Finally – Did You Know?

  • Before Chelsea FC was created, Fulham came close to signing a deal to use Stamford Bridge as their home ground.
  • Chelsea was founded at The Rising Sun Pub – now called The Butcher’s Arm – located on Fulham Road.
  • Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003 for a reported £140 million. This was by far the most lucrative sale of an English football club at the time and Abramovich soon matched the figure with his investment in new players.
  • Although Chelsea FC has traditionally enjoyed rivalries with other London sides, many fans also think of Liverpool as one of the club’s biggest rivals. This is due to a series of cup clashes in the new millennium, including a run of closely fought Champions League encounters. Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and Liverpool’s Rafael Benitez also added fire to the developing rivalry, due to their mutual and open dislike of each other.
  • Chelsea captain John Terry became the first captain to lift the FA Cup trophy at the new Wembley stadium, following the Blues’ 1-0 win against Manchester United in the 2007 final. Terry also became the first player to score an international goal at the new Wembley, in a 1-1 draw between England and Brazil.
