Cardiff City FC formed when Riverside FC and Riverside Albion amalgamated in 1902. The Bluebirds were one of the greatest sides in the English league during the 1920s and finished as runners-up of the First Division in 1924. Three years later, Cardiff City became the first non-English side to win the FA Cup. London-based Cardiff fans turned out to support the team at Wembley and they have since been known as “The 1927 Club". The Bluebirds also enjoyed years of success in the Welsh Cup, winning the trophy over twenty times. These triumphs enabled Cardiff City to qualify for European competition during the 1960s and 1970s. The highlight of the Bluebird’s European run was reaching the semi-final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1967. Cardiff City’s most recent success has included defying the odds to reach the FA Cup final in 2008.

Finally – Did You Know?
- It took six years for the club to be granted permission to use the name Cardiff City FC. The Bluebirds had been asked to prove that they were good enough to use the city’s name.
- The Bluebirds joined the Southern League Second Division in 1911 and finished their inaugural season in fourth place.
- Cardiff City missed out on the First Division title in 1924 due to an inferior goal average. Huddersfield Town won the championship.
- Hughie Ferguson scored the only goal in the victorious Cup final of 1927. Ferguson ended the season with thirty-two goals in all competitions. This was a club record until Robert Earnshaw beat it in 2003.
- Cardiff City shares a rivalry with other Welsh sides, such as Newport County and Swansea City. The club also has a significant rivalry with Bristol City; matches between the two teams are known as Severnside Derbies.
