Brief History of Boxing

Boxing is one of the oldest sports in world. The earliest references to fist fighting are found in the ancient times of Egypt and Sumeria. Boxing was also popular in Ancient Greece, where it was declared an Olympic event. In Ancient Rome, criminals and slaves used to fight for their freedom and even emperors began to take part in the sport. Boxing was eventually banned in much of Europe, as it was considered excessively brutal.

The sport was revived in England by James Figg, who was an incredibly successful boxer between 1719 and 1730. Figg was the first person to refer to the sport as "boxing" and he used sophisticated skill and tactics in his matches. His student, John Broughton, took over from Figg as the dominant figure in the sport. He introduced the London Prize Ring Rules and invented the first form of padded gloves. Boxing expanded as gambling venues increased. Finally, in the early twentieth century, sanctioning bodies began to regulate the sport and establish recognised boxing champions.

Highlights of the Boxing Book

Our Personalised Boxing Books stretch back to the early twentieth century, when the sport was dominated by popular champion Jack Dempsey. Dempsey remains famous for being one of the hardest punchers of all time. His fights grossed millions of dollars and earned boxing widespread media coverage. He was eventually defeated by Gene Tunney and the gifts also feature Tunney’s second victory against the former champion.

The Boxing Books go on to include coverage of famous fights featuring legends such as Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson, Sugar Ray Robinson and the original "Rocky" – Rocky Marciano. Another highlight of the gift book is the comprehensive coverage of Cassius Clay, who would later be known as Muhammad Ali. The boxing gifts incorporate his first fight in England (versus Henry Cooper), victories against the seemingly invincible Sonny Liston and the 1970 defeat of Jerry Quarry. The Boxing Book also contains coverage of Ali’s three famous bouts against Joe Frazier – including "The Fight of the Century" and "Thrilla in Manilla" – plus "The Rumble in the Jungle" against George Foreman.

Muhammad Ali defeated every top heavyweight fighter in the golden era of boxing and has gone on to be considered one of the greatest sportsmen of all time. The next iconic fighter in boxing was Mike Tyson, who became the youngest ever World Champion and the first boxer to hold all three titles at the same time. The Boxing Book features his 1986 win against Trevor Berbick, the 1988 victory against Tony Tucker and Tyson’s 1989 defeat of Frank Bruno. We also include both of his controversial losses to Evander Holyfield. In 1996, Tyson accused Holyfield of cheating in their boxing match by using illegal headbutts. One year later, during the much anticipated rematch, Tyson was disqualified for twice biting Holyfield’s ear.

The Personalised Boxing Book also contains newspaper coverage of British boxing success. The gifts include Barry McGuigan’s Featherweight Championship match and classic boxing contests featuring Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis. We also include famous fights of Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton and Amir Kahn.
