Brief History of Norwich City FC
Norwich City FC was formed in 1902, during a meeting in Criterion Café on White Lion Street. Although the club faced debt and liquidation in the early years, it reformed in 1919 and enjoyed steadily increasing attendance figures during the next fifty years. Barry Butler and Terry Allcock joined Norwich City in 1958 and this sparked success for the club. The Canaries reached the semi-final of the FA Cup in 1959, were promoted to the Second Division in 1960, and became the second ever winners of the League Cup in 1962.
In 1972, Norwich City was promoted to the top flight for the first time in the club’s history. The team enjoyed a successful first season in the top division, staying up in the league and reaching the League Cup final. Although they lost the final on this occasion, the Canaries won the trophy for a second time in 1985. Norwich City became founder members of the Premiership and finished third in the inaugural season. The Canaries played in the UEFA Cup the following year, which was an important moment for the club. Norwich City had qualified to play in Europe three times previously, but had been unable to compete due to the English ban following the Heysel tragedy.
Did you know...
Norwich City FC was originally nicknamed “The Citizens", but this changed to “The Canaries"in 1907. Norwich had long been known for canary breeding, but Journalists began to call the team “The Canaries"after an FA Cup tie with West Bromwich Albion, who were nicknamed “The Throstles"after another type of bird. The match was thus coined a ‘bird-singing contest’ by the media. Norwich City began to play in yellow and green the following season and a canary emblem was adopted in 1922.
The Canaries have played at Carrow Road Stadium since 1935. The ground was built in just eighty-two days, which was miraculous considering it was described as the “largest construction job in the City since the building of Norwich Castle."Floodlights were added to the stadium in 1956, but this nearly led the club to bankruptcy. Success in the 1959 FA Cup saved Norwich City from financial disaster. Following the Taylor Report of 1990, Carrow Road has an all-seated capacity of 26,034 supporters.
