In the Netherlands and Belgium, teenagers traditionally receive Christmas presents around December 6th – otherwise known as St Nicholas’ Day. St. Nicholas was the original Santa Claus and he is called ‘Sinterklaas’ in both countries. In the Netherlands, Sinterklaasavond (St. Nicholas’ Eve) is the main time for giving gifts at Christmas. In Belgium, children and teenagers put a shoe out in front of the fireplace on Sinterklaasavond. They then awake on the next morning to find the shoes filled with sweets and surrounded by Christmas presents.
In Spanish-speaking countries, such as Mexico and Puerto Rico, children and teenagers are given gifts on both Christmas day and the 6th January. This is because the Hispanic nations also celebrate the arrival of ‘Los Reyes Magos’ (The Three Wise Men) at the manger in Bethlehem. This was said to have occurred on the twelfth day of Xmas.
