"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is one of the most popular Christmas stories for children. The character was created by Robert May, who wrote the story of Rudolph to cheer up his four year-old daughter Barbara, whose mother was ill. Johnny Marks adapted the book into a song and it soon joined "Jingle Bells" as a favourite Christmas carol.
Rudolph was Santa Claus’ ninth reindeer in Christmas folk tales, following Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Although Rudolph and some of the other reindeer were depicted as males and drawings always included antlers, this isn’t actually possible. Male reindeer all lose their antlers in October or early November, whereas the females keep their antlers through the Xmas period and right up until they give birth in the spring.
