“Jingle Bells" was recently voted as the favourite Christmas song of boys and girls between eight and twelve years old. Bells used to be rung at the beginning of the festive season to drive out evil spirits, so that Christmas could be welcomed with joyfulness. “Jingle Bells" was written by James Pierpont in 1857, but the lyrics have changed over the years. The tune was actually intended for Thanksgiving rather than Xmas. In 1965 it became the first song to be transmitted from Space.
Another popular Christmas carol is "Silent Night", which was originally written in German by Joseph Mohr. Unlike other carols, the music for this song was written for the guitar. Legend suggests the carol was forgotten about for many years. It was rediscovered and then became popular when an organ broke at a church in Austria and they needed music that could be played on a guitar for the Christmas service.
