The origin of the Christmas Card
The first official Christmas card was produced by John Calcott Horsley in 1843. Inventor Henry Cole hired the English artist to design ready-to-send Xmas cards, as Cole had been too busy to prepare his own personal greetings. Horsley designed a card that featured a central drawing of a family enjoying their Christmas dinner with wine. Acts of charity were drawn on either side of the main picture and the Xmas card also included religious symbols, such as Ivy and holly.
Christmas cards became instantly popular and were mailed for a penny each. The Xmas card wasn’t without controversy, however, as many people were offended by the card showing a small child drinking wine; especially as he was surrounded by religious symbols. Hallmark produced their first Christmas cards in 1915 - just five years after the company had been formed. More than three billion Christmas cards are now sent annually in the USA alone. Xmas card packs have become more sophisticated and artistic over the years and they typically include popular Christmas images such as Santa Claus, snowmen, Xmas decorations and red robins.
