Wolverhampton Wanderers Personalised Football Diary
Unique Diary Gifts for Fans of Wolverhampton Wanderers!
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC was founded as St. Luke’s FC in 1877. A group of pupils from St Luke’s School in Blakenhall had been given a football by their headmaster as a reward for good work. John Baynton and John Broche organised a team and two years later the side merged with the Wanderers Cricket and Football Club. Wolves played in a black and gold strip in homage to the city’s motto: ‘Out Of Darkness Cometh Light‘. It remains one of the most instantly recognisable kits in the game.
In 1889 the club settled at Molineux Stadium; named after local merchant Benjamin Molineux, who had built his home on the grounds. Wolverhampton Wanderers had won two FA Cups by the First World War, forging a strong reputation for the side. In 1949, former Wolves captain Stan Cullis became manager of the club and he led the team through an incredibly successful era. Wolverhampton FC won three First Division titles, two domestic cups and a series of phenomenal European friendlies. Cullis would later be inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame due to the impact he had upon the side. Form began to decline in the 1960s, but Wolves remain one of the most accomplished clubs in the English game.
Our Personalised Wolverhampton Wanderers Diaries feature twelve reproduced match reports from our newspaper archives, focusing on some of the best performances and results in the history of the club. Starting from the month of your choice, this great gift is a terrific idea for any Wolves’ fan.
Diary Highlights
These Personalised Wolverhampton Wanderers Diaries include exciting league fixtures and European encounters and they begin with success in the domestic cups. In 1949, Wolves beat Leicester City 3-1 in the FA Cup final to win the competition for the third time. It was the club’s first major trophy in just over forty years and a great end to Stan Cullis’ first season as manager. Wolves would go on to win further cups and our A5 Diary also features the 2-1 win against Manchester City in the 1974 League Cup final.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have also enjoyed successful years in Europe, often reaching the last rounds of the tournaments. In 1959, Wolves beat AFK Vorwaerts 2-0 at home in the European Cup, subsequently reaching the quarter-finals. In 1960, the club competed in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Wolverhampton FC thrashed FK Austria Vienna 5-0 in the second leg of the quarter-final, before losing to Rangers in the semi-final. Wolves’ most successful season in continental competition came in 1971/1972, when the team reached the final of the UEFA Cup. Our Diary Gift features two matches from this stunning cup run; the 1-4 win against Academica Coimbra and the 2-1 victory against Hungarian side, Ferencvaros.
The Personalised Diary also contains an article written in 1954, as Wolverhampton Wanderers beat local rivals West Bromwich Albion to win the First Division Championship. Wolves would go on to win two further titles in the decade, before form began to stutter. The 1980s were particularly disastrous for the club and the team dropped down to the Fourth Division. After working hard to climb back up the leagues, Wolves were promoted to the Premiership in 2003, beating Sheffield United 3-0 at the end of the season.
