Rangers Personalised Football Diary
Great Diary Gifts for Fans of the Gers!
Rangers FC is the most successful team in the history of Scottish football, winning over fifty Scottish Championships and over fifty Scottish Cups. The club’s closest rival - both in competition and location - is Celtic FC. Rangers and Celtic have dominated the Scottish top flight for many decades and together the clubs are known as the Old Firm. Although there are different theories on the origin of this name, many believe that it refers to the first time that the Gers and the Bhoys played each other, back in 1888. One newspaper reported that the teams had ‘got on so well that you would believe they were old firm friends.’ Such sentiment seems incredible these days, as Rangers and Celtic are now famously bitter foes and the Old Firm derby is one of the most fiercely contested games in world football.
Our Personalised Rangers Diaries feature twelve match reports from our newspaper archives, including a fascinating selection games from the past hundred years. Starting from the month of your choice, these A5 Diaries are a great gift for fans of the Gers.
Diary Highlights
The Personalised Rangers Diaries feature trophy-clinching matches from a variety of competitions, beginning all the way back in 1930 with the Scottish Cup final replay. The Gers went into the tie as defending champions and they held the cup aloft once again following a 2-1 win against Partick Thistle. In 1964, Rangers FC beat Dundee United 3-1 in the final to win the ‘treble’ for the second time in the club’s history. The Gers would win another ‘treble’ in 1976, following a Scottish Cup final victory over Hearts FC that finished in the same scoreline.
Some of Rangers’ best Scottish Cup finals have been played against arch rivals Celtic FC and our A5 Diary includes match reports on two of the most exciting Old Firm cup confrontations. In 1966, a tense 0-0 draw lead to a replay and after seventy minutes of tension and solid defence, the two teams still could not be split. Finally, a deflected shot bounced to the popular Rangers full back Kai Johansen. He buried the ball into the back of the net to win the trophy for his club. In 2002, Rangers won the Scottish Cup following a classic derby that ended 3-2.
In addition to the Scottish Cup, our Diary Gift also contains the parading of the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the League Cup victory of 1984. You will also find an impressive range of reports on league fixtures. In 1978, Rangers beat Motherwell 2-0 to guarantee both the league championship and an incredible fourth ‘treble’ for the club. In 1987, the Gers drew 1-1 with Aberdeen to win their first title following an unexpected drought. This would kick-off an incredible spell of dominance for the club and in 1997, Rangers beat Dundee United 1-0 to secure a ninth consecutive Scottish Premier League title. Rangers have always come back fighting following disappointing periods and in 2005 they showed this ability once again. Following a poor previous season and a bad start to the new campaign, the Gers picked up their game and beat Hibernian 1-0 to ensure another title.
