Portsmouth Personalised Football Diary
Fantastic Diary Gifts for Pompey Fans!
Portsmouth FC formed in 1898 and the club took on many players from a disbanded local Royal Artillery team. In the 1920s, Portsmouth started to play strong, attacking football and ambition grew within the side. By the 1940s the club had become a force to be reckoned with, and although the press continued to write off their chances, Pompey went on to win two First Division titles. Portsmouth FC had reached the height of the game, but it would make the subsequent fall down to the Fourth Division even more painful. Pompey fans stayed loyal to their side and some even refer to the Fourth Division days as the club’s ‘golden period‘. The team started to win again, supporters got to visit new places and finally, Portsmouth rose back up to the Premiership. In 2008, Pompey played in Europe for the very first time and they were just eighteen minutes away from beating AC Milan in the UEFA Cup group stages.
Our Personalised Portsmouth Diaries celebrate the club’s history with a selection of match reports on some of the best Pompey games from the past century. Starting from the month of your choice, these A5 Diaries make a unique gift for any fan of the club.
Diary Highlights
The Personalised Portsmouth FC Diaries begin in 1939, when Pompey played Wolves in the FA Cup Final. Portsmouth were made rank outsiders in the tie, but manager Jack Anderson had worn the same spats through each of the rounds and the team became convinced they were lucky charms. The spats seemed to work, as the club lifted the trophy following a convincing 4-1 win. Porstmouth won the competition again in 2008, beating Cardiff City 1-0 in the final. On this occasion, Pompey were the firm favourites from the semi-finals onwards. Kanu scored the winning goal in the cagey encounter and the club was subsequently guaranteed a place in the UEFA Cup.
The A5 Diaries cover further FA Cup ties, including the final game of a trilogy of clashes against Hull City in the 1967 third round. We also cover the 2-4 win against Middlesbrough from 1992 and the outstanding fifth round victory against Liverpool FC in 2003.
In addition to these cup matches, our Portsmouth Calendar Gift also features match reports on an assortment of league games. In 1949, Pompey were playing attractive football and fans were hoping for success, as it was the club’s golden jubilee year. Portsmouth FC went on to win the title following an exciting 0-5 victory against Newcastle United. In 1984, Pompey again scored five goals, beating Brighton 5-1 at Fratton Park. The club had previously dropped down to the Fourth Division, but had been gallantly fighting their way up the league tables. In 1987, Pompey celebrated promotion back into the top flight.
The club enjoyed a successful period under Harry Redknapp from 2002, including promotion to the Premiership in 2003 and two successive wins against Manchester United in 2004. However, Redknapp left Portsmouth amidst controversy in 2005 and he angered fans by becoming the manager of Pompey’s fierce rival, Southampton FC. Ironically, the two clubs faced each other later that year, with Portsmouth thrashing the Saints 4-1. Redknapp would re-join Pompey at the end of the season.
