Brian Clough became manager of Derby County in 1967 and he led the club to unprecedented success Division title by seven points and three years later, Derby County would enjoy league glory . The Rams thrashed Bristol City 5-0 in the final game of the 1966/1977 season to win the Second in the top flight. A 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the club’s final match of the season had given them pole position, but the Rams faced a nervous wait to find out if they had done enough to finish champions for the first time.
The team were in Malaga when news reached them that they had in fact won the championships and with this famous First Division title came a chance to compete in Europe during the next season. The A5 Diary features the second round European clash with Benfica; Derby would win 3-0, despite being classed as underdogs in the clash.
In 1973, Brian Clough rocked the Rams by quitting as manager following disputes with the board. The Diary Gift contains a report on the moment the legendary boss stepped down, but further success for Derby County soon follows. Former player Dave Mackay took over as boss and the change was almost seamless, as the 1970s continued to be successful for Derby FC. Some notable Mackay matches featured in the Derby County Diary include beating Atletico Madrid on penalties during the Ram’s UEFA Cup run of 1974, the 2-0 Charity Shield win against West Ham in 1975, and from the same year, the legendary 4-1 thrashing of Real Madrid in the first leg of the European Cup.
