Stoke City Personalised Football Calendar
A Perfect Gift Idea For Fans Of The Potters!
Stoke City FC is one of the oldest professional football clubs in England. Fantastic players such as Sir Stanley Matthews and Gordon Banks have led the Potters through wonderful periods of top flight football over the years and the club won its first major trophy in 1972, beating Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup final. Stoke City was somewhat of a curse for the Blues at the time, as the Potters knocked the London club out of the League Cup three times in four consecutive seasons. In 1974, Stoke City beat Chelsea in the first ever league match to be played on a Sunday.
Our Personalised Stoke City FC Calendars feature a range of articles and match reports from our newspaper archives, covering some of the most significant moments in the club's history. Starting from the month of your choice, these A3 Calendars are a unique idea and make a terrific gift for any fan of the Potters.
Calendar Highlights
The Personalised Stoke City Calendars feature newspaper coverage on some of the defining transfers and triumphs for the club under the management of Tony Waddington. Our Calendar Gift also incorporates more recent highlights, such as the 0-0 draw against Leicester City in 2008. This match clinched promotion to the Premiership and an estimated £35 million in television money.
In 1961, Sir Stanley “The Magician"Matthews returned to Stoke City FC having played elsewhere for fourteen years. He was forty-six, but Waddington believed Matthews still had a lot to give his former club. The upturn in results spoke volumes for the positive effect his return had on the team and it turned out to be one of Waddington's best decisions as manager. Matthews was a world-class winger who was known as one of the best dribblers that football had ever seen. Our A3 Calendar features three articles celebrating this Stoke City legend, which were all written in the 1960s. One of these articles is a match report on the 2-0 win against Luton Town in 1963. This victory guaranteed the Second Division title for the Potters and thus returned Stoke City to the top flight.
The Calendar Gift also includes an article written on Gordon Banks' move to Stoke City in 1967. In 1972, the English World Cup winner would play a big part in the club's League Cup triumph. The Potters had to play West Ham four times in the semi-final tie, as the teams were evenly matched and could not be split. Stoke City finally beat the Hammers 4-2 after Banks had broken the Hammers' resolve by saving a Geoff Hurst penalty. The club progressed to the final, where they would beat Chelsea 2-1 to win their most significant trophy to date. Reports on both of these games feature in our Stoke City Calendar.
The Potters have since won the Autoglass trophy, beating Stockport 1-0 in the 1992 final. This match report is another highlight of our Football Calendar, in addition to wins against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in 1974, 1975 and 1993 respectively.
