With Christmas on the horizon, GoneDigging thought it time to put together the definitive list of the best Christmas songs ever made. Want to know what song sits atop the Christmas tree? Read on…
#10. Wham! Last Christmas
George Michael clearly takes the limelight in this vid, but where is Andrew Ridgley, the other half of Wham, what happened to him? Take in the sweet hair styles of 1984. If you have one of these “do’s”, just for the record, it’s a “don’t.”
# 9. Bing Crosby – Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas)
Recorded way back in 1950, 'Mele Kalikimaka' is a Hawaiian-themed song which will make you yearn for the sunshine. “Mele Kalikimaka” means “Merry Christmas” and the song was featured in L.A. Confidential and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
#8. Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You
We like this because, unlike in some of her other songs, there aren’t any weird squeaky notes and vocal acrobatics. It’s just a pleasantly uplifting Christmas love song. Don’t you think she looks fetching in her Santa hat?
#7. Frank Sinatra – Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
How could we forget this little heart-warmer? It’s probably not the best version of the song, but it still sounds good. Even Judy Garland did a version. She sang it to Margaret O’Brien and it wowed the audience to the point they cried their eyes out.
#6. Gabriella Cilmi – Warm This Winter
‘Warm This Winter', a cover of a fairly unheard of Connie Francis single, had a spot on the Co-op ad. Cilmi’s deep, husky vocals encapsulate the festive cheer in the lyrics brilliantly. The result? A yuletide pop delicacy that’s frothier than a well-whisked hot chocolate.
#5. Mud – Lonely This Christmas
It will be lonely this Christmas without this song on your list. It’ll be oh so chilly, without this record to hold. You get the idea… A gorgeous song made in honour of one of the biggest pop stars of our lifetime. It definitely deserves a place pretty high up on the list.
#4. A Spaceman Came Travelling
You’ll probably notice the intro to the song is the same as ‘Kiss from a Rose’ by Seal. Aside from that, it can’t be denied that this song is literally breathtakingly beautiful. We’re a sentimental ‘ole lot here at GoneDigging Towers, aren’t we?
#3. Michael Bublé – It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
This song just makes you want to curl up next to a fire, with some mince pies, gingerbread and hot chocolate. Bublé’s voice is heart-meltingly velvety and warm…
#2. Enya – Oíche Chiúin - Silent Night
Phwoaar. This is guaranteed to send shivers down your spine before you can say “Rudolph the red nosed reindeer”. It’s probably one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs around. There’s no way to not be at peace when you listen to this song. To complete the mood, have yourself a warm mulled wine and you’ll be in heaven.
#1. Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas
And in at number one, it’s Band Aid. Founded in 1984 by Midge Ure and Bob Geldof, this Irish powerhouse released this song to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. The track hit the chart back in ’84 and was a monster success. All proceeds went to charity. This song's still a spine-tingler and surely deserves to sit atop the Christmas tree?
